Quirky and GE introduce seven affordable and app-controllable smart home devices

November 11, 2014

The partnership between Quirky and GE continues to pay off for buyers looking to make a smart home without breaking the bank. Seven new app-controllable devices have just been introduced.

Probably the most interesting is the pictured Norm, which Quirky wants you to know isn’t a thermostat. Instead, the $80 device controls your heating and air conditioning systems to make your home comfortable at all times.

The Spotter Uniq can be customized to add up to four different sensors, including temperature, humidity, sound, light, and more. It starts at $30, and the price increases depending on how many sensors you need.

Retailing for $40, the Tripper will let you know if a window or door is opened or closed. The Ascend is a $100 smart controller that will let you close or open your garage door from anywhere.

Overflow, which costs $35, will detect any unwanted standing water. The $50 Outlink is a smart wall outlet with a built-in energy monitor. Finally, the $60 Tapt is a smart wall switch that can control both standard and smart bulbs.

All the products can be preordered now directly from Quirky’s site. You’ll need the $50 Wink Hub to control all of the new products.

The companion Wink app, which can be used to control all of Quirky’s devices, has also been updated today. Along with the addition of customizable shortcuts, the app now features an activity feed to show you exactly what’s going on in your house.

Users can also add or edit robots to automate a home based on the products connected. Designed for the iPhone/iPod touch, it can be downloaded now on the App Store for free.

If you’re interested in jumping into the growing smart home market, Quirky and GE have done a great job creating some really affordable products. I also like the fact that customers can start off small and add devices over time.
