Google updates Chrome and Docs apps for iOS with new features
Google has just released a significant update to its Chrome Web browser app for iOS. In addition, it has recently issued a notable update to its document creation and collaboration app for iOS, Google Docs.
The latest update to Chrome for iOS most notably introduces a Today widget. This widget lets you quickly open a new tab, start a voice search, and open a link copied off other apps in Chrome right from Notification Center in iOS 8.
In the Chrome app itself, the update introduces a new gesture-based feature for easily refreshing, opening and closing tabs. This lets you pull down to refresh the current tab, pull down and swipe right to close the tab, or pull down and swipe left to open a new tab.
Rather than going through a series of taps, I find the new gesture-based feature to be a more convenient way to initiate tab actions, especially on the larger screens of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.
The new version of Chrome also features support for app extensions, including those for the popular password management apps 1Password and LastPass (allowing you quickly log in to sites).
As for Google Docs, it has been updated with support for editing tables, tracking changes and comments in Word files, and accepting and rejecting suggested edits from the comment stream. It has also been further improved with bug fixes and performance enhancements.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 7.0 or later, Chrome and Google Docs are both available on the App Store for free.
