Kindle update adds iPhone support for flashcards, enhanced 'Before You Go' experience

iOS Reading
April 6, 2015

Kindle’s iOS app, the free piece of mobile software which allows iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners to access their Kindle library from an Apple device, has just received a nice update making two main changes.

Now, users can access Amazon’s “Flashcards for Print Replica Textbooks” when running the Kindle app on an iPhone or iPod touch. Before now, flashcards were only available in the Kindle iPad application; as Amazon explains online, they’re designed to test users’ memory of some of the key terms and concepts presented in e-books, and users also have the option of creating their own sets of flashcards, too. Kindle’s iOS update indeed means users can access these flashcards on an iPhone, allowing for more convenient on-the-spot study using the Kindle iOS application.

The second change to reach Kindle for iOS concerns the “Before You Go” experience, which appears when users finish a Kindle e-book. As of the app’s most recent update, this experience is better than ever: users are now able to “find related books and learn more about each book or download its sample by tapping on its cover,” Amazon explains in the application’s release notes. This, of course, should make it much easier for users to find e-books they’re going to enjoy using the iOS app.

Finally, Kindle’s release notes add that “performance and stability improvements” have been made to the app, which is always nice to see.

Though an iOS device probably doesn’t offer the best long term reading experience for users (that backlight is a killer!), Kindle’s iOS app conveniently allows owners of Amazon’s popular e-reader to continue reading their ongoing e-book using an iPhone or iPad. Changes are synced between your iOS device and Kindle, and the app’s interface is designed to make the process of reading a book, newspaper, or magazine in Kindle for iOS as easy on the eyes as possible.

Luckily for iOS users, the Kindle app receives fairly regular updates from Amazon; the last of these brought Goodreads support in December, and before this an update added optimization for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus a few months earlier, in September.

The most recent, of course, is available to download on the App Store now.
