Best new apps of the week: ETA and VideoPop

App-dicted
June 9, 2015

Every week, our staff will handpick an app from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-have download for your iPhone or iPad. These apps will always be from various categories, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and have been using them daily. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy!

ETA for Apple Watch

Now you can have your travel times and directions right on your wrist with our App of the Week.

Do you need quick and easy access to travel times and driving directions to your favorite destinations? Then you need our App of the Week, ETA by Eastwood Apps. While this is not a new app, it received a big update this week, bringing the app to the Apple Watch, which is a perfect device to have this app on.

The main app itself has gotten a big design update since I first reviewed it. The app now displays travel times in a larger font so it is easier to get that info with a single glance, and colored dots will tell you how the traffic will be on the way.

Once you have all of your favorite locations saved, if you have an Apple Watch, these can all be accessed from your wrist. Just launch the ETA app on the Apple Watch and you get a scrollable list of your destinations, with the focus on the travel time thanks to the large font. With a flick of your wrist, you can see how long it will take you to drive to your destination point. Tapping on an item shows the distance and fastest route to get there.

Unfortunately, while the main ETA app gives users the option for other navigation apps for directions (such as Waze, Google Maps, Navigon, MotionX, and CityMapper), you are limited to Apple Maps on the Apple Watch, at least for now. This is the only drawback of the ETA Watch app at the moment.

We’ve been fans of ETA ever since it first came out last year, and we are happy to have this on our Apple Watches now. If you are looking for an app to give you fast access to travel times and directions of your favorite spots, then this is a must-have app. ETA can be found on the iPhone App Store for $1.99 with an Apple Watch app.

Honorable Mention VideoPop

A video a day will keep your memories intact thanks to our Honorable Mention of the week.

Having a hard time remembering each day of your life? Maybe some video clips can help you recall your daily life, and that’s just what our Honorable Mention this week does. Say hello to VideoPop from Lonson Banh.

The concept behind the app is simple: all you do is record a video each day and then string them all together for one complete, comprehensive look at your week, month, or even year.

VideoPop has a simple and clean interface that is intuitive and feels natural. You can record videos directly from the app or import them from your Camera Roll or Dropbox account. There are filters that you can apply, and VideoPop also allows you to use your favorite tunes as background music. Tags and captions can be added, video length can be edited, and all of your videos can even be merged into a single montage.

If you have trouble remembering to record video every day, don’t worry. There is a reminders feature to tell you to get some new footage in the app at certain times throughout the day, and you can add multiple clips in a single day. A search tool allows you to search for certain videos with tags or titles, and your finished creation can be shared via social media.

Keeping memories intact is important, and we’ve been enjoying using VideoPop for this lately. If you want to capture your life in videos rather than just still photos, then VideoPop is a great choice to consider. It is available on the App Store for the iPhone for free. There are some in-app purchases for video filters and unlimited video merging.
