Popular podcast app Instacast 5 has been discontinued

There’s sadly one less way for iPhone or iPad users to listen to their favorite podcasts. Vemedio, developer of popular Instacast 5, informed users this weekend that the app is being “discontinued.”

In an email, first reported on by 9to5Mac, founder Martin Hering said that all of the company’s products were affected.

He states the servers will be kept running “as long as we can.” So that means the iOS and Mac apps should continue to function, at least in the short term. A lack of funding was apparently Vemedio’s downfall as Hering said that he “ran out of funds to keep the project going.”

The Vemedio Twitter account has recently been taken private while the company’s site simply states “discontinued.”

Ironically, just a few weeks ago, the app received a major update that brought a nice number of features to the Apple Watch.

If you’ve been using Instacast, there are a number of other options you can check out. Apple’s iOS 8 features a built-in Podcasts app while the third-party title Overcast is also another great option.

Both of those apps went head-to-head in an App Smackdown in May. See what our own Joe White thought about both titles and who he declared the winner.
