The next-generation Apple TV won't debut at WWDC

A new report from The New York Times says that the rumored next-generation Apple TV won’t be unveiled at WWDC.

While Apple is expected to announce iOS 9, OS X 10.11, an improved Apple Watch SDK for developers, and a new streaming music service, the updated set-top box was pulled from the slate last month. The new hardware reportedly featured a true App Store, Siri support, and a faster A8 chip. Here’s more from the publication:

Yet one much ballyhooed device will be absent from the conference: a new Apple TV, Apple’s set-top box for televisions. The company planned as recently as mid-May to use the event to spotlight new Apple TV hardware, along with an improved remote control and a tool kit for developers to make apps for the entertainment device. But those plans were postponed partly because the product was not ready for prime time, according to two people briefed on the product.

Apple declined to comment.

Earlier this week, news leaked that a rumored Apple subscription TV service also wouldn’t be announced at the developer conference, slated to kick off Monday, June 8 with Apple’s usual keynote.

With the TV service still being hammered out between Apple and the content providers, I’m not all that surprised that the actual hardware release is being delayed. It makes much more sense to release both at one time. Maybe the subscription service and hardware could be introduced in early fall before the start of the new television season. But I won’t be holding my breath.
