Meerkat allows iOS users to broadcast directly from GoPro cameras
In its battle against Twitter-owned Periscope, streaming video app Meerkat has just announced a new and interesting integration for iOS device owners.
According to CNBC, the app will now allow live streaming directly from GoPro 3 cameras. A forthcoming update app will bring the functionality to GoPro 4 cameras as well.
Simply connect the GoPro to your iOS device and then open up Meerkat. Shake your phone or tablet, and the GoPro will be paired and ready to broadcast live video.
The Meerkat app is universal and designed for the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad/iPad mini. It can be downloaded now on the App Store for free.
Providing GoPro integration is definitely an interesting move and should definitely be able to expand the live video content available through the service. The GoPro cameras are designed to go pretty much anywhere on land and under water.
While Meerkat debuted earlier this year to a generally positive reception, its had a hard time gaining traction against Periscope and its deeper integration with Twitter. I’m interested to see if the GoPro integration can help the app catch on with more users.
Just yesterday, GoPro announced that it will soon unveil a native app to allow users to edit video on their iPhone or iPad.
