While most everyone will probably be looking to the sky this weekend for fireworks during the Independence Day holiday here in the United States, Apple’s latest free App of the Week offers a different take on what’s above.
For the next seven days, Star Walk 2 can be downloaded for free. It’s usually $2.99.
Space, the final frontier
If you have a passing interest in astronomy, or even just the stars above, Star Walk 2 is a great place to start. It provides information about stars, planets, constellations, and more.
Easily my favorite feature is the real-time motion tracking. Using your iOS device’s built-in gyroscope, you can hold up an iPhone or iPad to match the stars you can see from your location. If you’re looking for something in particular, you can search for it and the app will tell you where to look in the sky.
Hitting the App Store last summer, our own Christine Chan enjoyed the app in her original review:
I’m not a serious stargazer by any means, but I do love seeing what’s above our heads all the time. Star Walk 2 is beautifully designed with amazing 3-D models, is fast, and has plenty of powerful features to make the experience a great one.
I highly recommend checking this one out if you don’t have another astronomical app, or even if you have the original.
It was also named as our AppAdvice App of the Week shortly after its release.
Star Walk 2 is a universal app designed for the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad/iPad mini. With a number of in-app purchase opportunities, users can do things like upgrade information on constellations and planets.
