Lens•Lab

Lens•Lab

Jeff Menter

Lens•Lab is a virtual lens simulation tool for photographers of all skill levels. It graphically illustrates how depth of field and field of view relate to your SLR camera and lenses.

Professionals will like how quick and easy it is to get depth of field calculations.

Semi-pro photographers will enjoy configuring "what-if?" scenarios for various lenses.

Photography beginners will find it to be a great learning tool by exploring the interplay of aperture, focal length, and focal distance in real time.

Lens•Lab is more than a great depth of field calculator, it's a lens simulator that can help you explore, see, and intuitively understand how depth of field works with your camera and lenses.

Lens•Lab Features:

Advanced visual depiction of depth of field with real-time controls:
• The background scales from 10 centimeters to 100 meters interactively
• Out-of-focus areas are represented as blurred in real-time
• Distance labels, angle of view, and other information updates as you touch

Easily control aperture, focal length, and focal distance with sliders or touch:
• Aperture (from ƒ/0.95 to ƒ/64 in continuous increments)
• Focal Length (configurable from 1mm to "very large number")
• Focal Distance (from 10cm to 100m)

Information overlays are independently configurable:
• Hyperfocal Distance
• Far Depth of Field
• Focal Distance
• Near Depth of Field
• Total Depth of Field
• Vertical Angle of View
• Distance Scale
• Simulated Blur

Sensor size is configurable for:
• Full Frame (35mm)
• APS-H (1.3x crop factor)
• DX (1.5x crop factor)
• APS-C (1.6x crop factor)
• Four Thirds (2.0x crop factor)

Additionally, there are controls for distance units (metric or imperial) and display of Full Frame Equivalent focal length (for cameras with sensors smaller than full frame.)

Included is a usage guide that explains all features of the application as well as depth of field in photography.

Lens•Lab works with all iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad models running iOS 8 or newer.

OptimumCS-Pro

OptimumCS-Pro

George Douvos

OptimumCS-Pro is the unique Optimum Camera Settings tool for imaging professionals — for photographers, cinematographers and videographers. As a professional, you spend a fortune on quality optics — OptimumCS-Pro helps you use that expensive gear to its full potential.

In all imaging work where you require the sharpest possible image across a depth range, OptimumCS-Pro is far superior to any depth of field calculator. You know that stopping down decreases image blur caused by defocus, but you also know that, on the other hand, it increases blur caused by diffraction. So you don't want to stop down too far. What, then, is the optimum aperture? And what is the optimum focus distance? OptimumCS-Pro is designed to answer precisely those questions.

And it alone gets the workflow right:
• Decide what are the nearest and furthest objects in your scene that need to be sharp.
• Set their distances in OptimumCS-Pro, and set the focal length of your lens.
• The app instantly displays the focus distance and aperture that minimise the combined effects of defocus blur and diffraction.

Yes, you'll have the sharpest image across the desired depth that the laws of physics will allow (and therefore, in all cases, sharper than what you'll get via traditional practice). But what's also great is that it couldn't be any easier, simpler and faster! OptimumCS-Pro's instant results are perfect for creative professionals who don’t want their tools to get in the way of their work or their art.

In addition to the basic outputs, OptimumCS-Pro displays image sharpness information, so you'll know if your shot will be sharp enough to meet your needs. Also included is data on shooting at other than optimal settings. Can’t shoot at the optimum aperture, because, for example, you need a faster shutter speed afforded by a wider aperture? You’ll know exactly what the effect of your decisions will be.

A few words on the "pro" version:

OptimumCS-Pro retains the elegant, uncluttered look of OptimumCS, adds expanded functionality and adds options to configure functionality to better meet your individual needs:
• User-definable focal length presets allow lightning-fast focal length selection.
• Numerical readouts for distances and aperture complement the analog scales.
• The optimum aperture snaps to your choice of the nearest 1/3 stop or the nearest 1/2 stop.
• The aperture scale shows 1/3 stop or 1/2 stop markers (user selectable).
• The aperture scale can be set to display apertures to f/22 or f/64.
• Several different distance scales, emphasising near or far distances, are available, as is one for use with Hansma’s focus shift method in large format photography.
• An optional "distance snap" function makes the distance slider even easier to use.
• The facility to set wavelength is available for those working in the infrared or ultraviolet part of the spectrum.
• The wavelength selection button gives a visual indication of the spectral range in which you are working (visible, IR or UV).
• A marker can be placed on the blur spot diameter scale as a reminder of what you consider acceptable blur sizes.

Focus DOF Camera

Focus DOF Camera

Harald Meyer

Focus Camera creates well-focused images from a set of images with varying focus distances. Sometimes there are situations where objects which are near and distant from your camera should be sharp in a single image. Focus Camera captures three images with different selectable focus distances and merges these into a single focused image.

Features include:
- Capture images with varying focus distances using intuitive touch selection
- Import captured images from photo gallery (e.g. images already captured with a DSLR for instance)
- Turn off automatic image alignment
- Control saturation, brightness, contrast, details, shadows, highlights
- HQ processing mode (slow)
- Ideal for landscape and macro photography

Note:
- iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and newer devices are recommended because the image processing requires a lot of processing power.
- Hardware acceleration works only on iPhone4S, iPad 2 and newer devices
- DOF: depth of field, light field camera

Focus / DOF hyperfocal calculator depth of field

Focus / DOF hyperfocal calculator depth of field

Dmitry Zaika

Consider bying new lens? Need to work the math for a perfect shot?

Use this depth of field and circle of confusion calculator to simulate the out of focus blur, depth of field and hyperfocal distance for different camera configurations, including the diffraction effect for small apertures. The blur values are measured in the pixels of the camera sensor. The blur simulation shows how much the infinity and the object will be blurred as seen on a 25 cm or 10 inch printout or screen.

You can tap on the magnifying glass to switch between full frame view, to asses the size of objects, and 1/10 of the frame view, where you can evaluate the blur.

The parameters are: *Distance* - distance to the object, *Lens type* - focal length, *F-number* - aperture setting, *Focus distance* - distance the lens is focused at, *Sensor* - the megapixel count of the matrix and the camera sensor size.

You can use the *HYPERFOCAL* mode to set the focus value to the hyperfocal distance for the current F value.

If you want to have both the object and the infinity in focus, use *AUTO HYPERFOCAL* mode, it will find the minimal F and the corresponding focus value. *AUTO HYPERFOCAL* will try to achieve the best possible result, but due to the diffraction effect of small apertures it's not always possible to get a sharp image, the simulation will reflect this.

The last smart function is *MAX BLUR FOCUS* - given an object distance and F-value it will suggest the closest focus value which will keep the object still in focus, while achieving maximum blur for the background. The idea is somewhat opposite of the hyperfocal shooting - here your focus point lies between the camera and the object with the depth of field ending on the object plane, ensuring the maximum possible blur for the background at your given F value. This works well if you are forced to use a relatively high F number, but there are no other objects in the view which are closer than the target.

The standard *circle of confusion* used for DoF, smart focus and max blur calculations is the sensor diagonal divided by *1730*, which is the so called Zeiss formula.

Tack Sharp 2.0

Tack Sharp 2.0

Chris Hunt

Tack Sharp 2.0 is a complete re-write of the original 2009 Tack Sharp, an already well-established and much utilized app for photographers. In addition Tack Sharp 2.0 adds Apple Watch support.

Tack Sharp 2.0 helps photographers with rapid determination of camera settings for the sharpest focus range of multiple subjects. Tack Sharp allows photographers to explore different camera settings before shooting, to decide which settings to use for optimal focus.

A swipe gesture reveals user settings including Day and Night options for outside or studio photography. The Tack Sharp 2.0 engine is customizable with five other settings: preferred units (meters or feet); six different camera sensor formats which each provides a recommended "circle of confusion"; the ability to enter a specific "circle of confusion" for other sensor sizes or personal preferences; and specification of the number of f/stops and stop increments to be used, all ensuring this tool will work effectively for any photographer in a wide range of situations, cameras, and lenses, as part of their personal photographic process.

Tack Sharp 2.0 setting changes are communicated to a connected App Watch instantly.

Apple Watch support allows photographers the same focusing optimization tool on their wrist and avoids the struggle of handling an iPhone and a camera together. The interface is a direct parallel to the iPhone interface, offering intuitive ease of use.

Tack Sharp 2.0 uses standard equations for Depth of Field, so there is no mystery to the internal workings and users can place their full confidence in the calculations. What makes Tack Sharp different is the simple user interface and approach, to be used as a practical tool for any level of photographer, without any fuss or complexity.
