App Store Classics

App Store Classics

The App Store might not be as popular as it is today without the introduction of these games. Here are some of the earliest and most popular games ever.

Angry Birds

Bird-flinging fun awaits in this App Store classic.

Angry Birds
Pop those piggies

For those who enjoy smashing things in physics puzzles.

The aim of the game is simple. Evil Pigs abound, and it's up to you (and your team of Angry Birds) to destroy their various defenses as efficiently as possible through slingshotting bird after bird. Aim carefully, add just the right amount of tension to the sling, and your shot should prove successful.

Why we love it

This game is the real deal: it's fun, addictive, features great graphics, and cute characters. It's also part of a huge Angry Birds game series which you can work through.

For those who...

  • Love physics games for iOS.
  • Hate pigs.
  • Enjoy problem-based gaming.
  • Persevere to succeed and don't give up.

Not for those who...

  • Have little patience with puzzle games.
  • Are pig sympathisers.
Canabalt

Race endlessly across rooftops.

Canabalt
Shifting Environments

For those that like endless runners with tight controls and a dedicated theme.

As one of the originals in this genre, Canabalt has you running to survive the destruction around you. You can escape alone or bring another runner along for the journey. Controls are simple allowing you jump across rooftops with a tap. Obstacles and distractions are everywhere, so keep your eyes peeled as you race for safety.

Why we love it

Canabalt is an endless runner that is easy to pick up and play. With understated, but attractive retro-style graphics and fast-paced background music, the energy will keep you moving, jumping, and running to escape.

For those who...

  • For fans of endless running games.
  • Remember the classic.
  • Love speed.

Not for those who...

  • Not for those who like shooters or puzzles.
  • Like things slow.
Fruit Ninja Classic

Slicing fruit has never been so much fun!

Fruit Ninja Classic
Fruit-slicing fun

For those who like fast paced action and touch controls.

So, you slice as many different types of fruit as possible. Great. But Fruit Ninja offers so much more: fruit chains, a Zen Mode, and multiplayer make it a title we keep on coming back to, time and time again.

Why we love it

This is definitely a title iOS developers have imitated (ahem, "taken inspiration from") in the years following Fruit Ninja's original release. Because of this, it's a genre-defying App Store classic, and is definitely a title all iOS gamers should take for a spin.

For those who...

  • It’s for gamers who enjoy fast-paced action.
  • If you like competing with friends on leaderboards, this is the game for you. It originally lit up the App Store in 2010 and is still somehow able to do so today, too.

Not for those who...

  • This is tried and true gameplay, which means you might have already played a knockoff. If so, there’s not much new here.
Tiny Wings

Take to the skies in this beautifully-crafted physics game.

Tiny Wings
Fly With Tiny Wings

For those who like accessible one touch controls for an endearing character.

Your aim in Tiny Wings is simple: keep on flying, for as long (and as far) as you can. As a bird, you can hold your finger on the screen to nose-dive down and towards one of countless slopes which are scattered across the landscape. Provided you time it just right, this can result in a boost of speed as your tiny winged bird slides and soars of its target slope.

Why we love it

Tiny Wings is simply one of the most addictive iOS games we've ever played. It offers a heck of a lot of satisfaction (there's nothing better than timing your descent just right in order to slide off a slope and into the air), and it features nice graphics and sound effects. If you've yet to take Tiny Wings for a spin, we don't think you'll be disappointed.

For those who...

  • Enjoy endless games.
  • Have always wished they had the superpower of flight.
  • Have enjoyed similar bird-themed titles.

Not for those who...

  • Expect console-quality games from the App Store.
Tilt to Live

Tilt for your life in this highly-acclaimed arcade game from One Man Left.

Tilt to Live
Incline to survive

For those who like over the top action and tilt based games.

In Tilt to Live, you're in control of a small triangular ship and your gyroscope-equipped iPhone is the steering wheel. Turn left and right by moving your handset through the air, and avoid enemy missiles (while taking out actual enemies) as you go. You'll need to have fast reactions and smart tactics in order to survive in this game.

Why we love it

Tilt to Live defined a genre in App Store gaming, and it's still going strong today. We love the title: it's fun, fast-paced, and features an awesome control system that never gets old.

For those who...

  • Love gyroscope-based controls.
  • Enjoy outer-space blast-ups.
  • Aren't afraid to move their iPhone through the air like a crazy person in public.

Not for those who...

  • Prefer on-screen controls.
  • Suffer with motion sickness.
Tiny Tower - Free City Building

Build your tower and keep its bitizens happy

Tiny Tower - Free City Building
Build It Up

For those who like to build and manage cute digital worlds and characters.

Tiny Tower is a building-based simulation game. You build your own tower, floor by floor, and put businesses in to earn money you can use to build more levels. Every tower has its own unique challenges and opportunities, and it's up to you to manage all of them and keep your skyscraper's pint-sized citizens happy.

Why we love it

Tiny Tower has cute graphics and a micro-scaled economy. You manage all aspects of your tower, and special events occur that give you unique opportunities to put in truly special shops and other occupants into your skyscraper. The game features GameCenter integration, so you can visit your friends' towers and see how they're doing.

For those who...

  • Enjoy games similar to Sim City
  • Want to manage their own miniature skyscraper

Not for those who...

  • Don't care for endless games
  • Don't like sim games
Super Mega Worm

Feed the worm in the hugely enjoyable Super Mega Worm.

Super Mega Worm
Activate Special Abilities

For those who like to destroy things, and over over the top action.

Set in the not-too-distant future, Super Mega Worm sees a desperate Mother Earth seek to purge the planet from the "parasite" of humanity through unleashing a worm -- controlled by the player -- which destroys, well, pretty much everything. The more you eat the bigger you grow and the longer you survive. It's as simple as that.

Why we love it

This game is a ton of fun. It's also a retro title, featuring pixellated graphics and super sound effects. Plus, who doesn't want to control a massive worm hell-bent on destruction? I know I do.

For those who...

  • Love retro titles.
  • Played Nokia Snake as a kid.
  • Like their iOS games to feature a dash of mindless destruction.

Not for those who...

  • Expect high-res graphics from their iOS games.
Hook Champ

Once this game gets its hooks in you there'll be no going back.

Hook Champ
Get hooked

For those that like retro inspired games, or simply swinging with a grappling hook.

This is a classic physics platformer in which gamers must swing through "haunted ruins," catching treasure as they go, in order to succeed. There are character upgrades, support for leaderboards, and collectibles for players to pick up en route. The application also features gloriously retro pixellated graphics, and each level poses its own unique challenges.

Why we love it

This is an App Store swinging classic. We've seen the formula repeated elsewhere, but Hook Champ is the original and for this reason it's definitely worth checking out. It's feature-rich and an all-round good laugh. There's a lot to like here.

For those who...

  • Love physics games for iOS.
  • Enjoy retro graphics and sound effects.
  • Like to jump in and out of iOS games for minutes (or even hours) at a time.

Not for those who...

  • Expect high-res graphics from their iOS titles.
  • Struggle with physics-based controls in games.

You have glue bottles, flashlights, toy blasters, and a myriad of other defenses to slow down or stop the approaching Creeps.
