Apple's Software
November 7, 2017

Animoji are officially a hit. A new feature exclusive to the iPhone X, it uses the TrueDepth camera to mirror your facial expressions on one of 12 different characters – everything from a unicorn to a pile of poop.

We’ll take a look at what they are and how you can send one to friends and family.

You can pick from one of 12 different characters, yes even a pile of poo.

Anyone with an iPhone X can record up to a 10-second Animoji message to send to friends or family. Along with mimicking your facial expressions, sound will also be included.

To get started, head to Messages and select an existing thread or create a new one. Select the App Store message drawer icon and then the image of the monkey Animoji.

Next, you’ll need to select a specific Animoji on the left side. You can also slide up to see the Animoji in a full screen. There are 12 different options – monkey, robot, cat, dog, alien, fox, poop, pig, panda, rabbit, chicken, and unicorn.

After making a selection, you’ll need to bring your face in view of the front-facing camera. You’ll then see the record button. Hit that, and go wild for the next 10 seconds. You can preview the recording or even select a new Animoji to use with recording. To delete it, select the trash can icon.

If you’re happy with the message, just hit the usual Send icon.

An Animoji can also be made into a sticker

Animoji can also be used as stickers that can be added to messages. Instead of hitting record, just make a facial expression and then touch and hold the Animoji into a new or existing message.

It will then automatically be sent.

Any Animoji message or sticker can be sent to others even without an iPhone X.

To save an Animoji message, you can bring it up in full screen in the message thread and select Save. They’ll be available in the Photos app.

In the meantime, you can see an example of what’s already being done with the fun technology.
