Games are huge, and we knew the fourth-generation Apple TV would get some of the hottest titles to play. This week, I’ve gone into our NowGaming for Apple TV app and pulled out the best Apple TV games that I think represent just what the fourth-generation set-top box is capable of, resulting in games that feel just like you’re playing on an Xbox or PlayStation.
A breathtaking nautical adventure
Yes, this is the second week in a row I’ve featured Oceanhorn. It’s just that good of a game. You’ll enjoy the nautical theme, and the action gets intense. This is definitely a console-quality game, so enjoy it. It’s available for $8.99 on all of the App Stores; it’s universal between your iOS device and Apple TV, so you can really play it anywhere.
A Puzzle Adventure
Beyond combat, there are also puzzle sequences to solve.
Battle Big Bosses
Use your sword, shield, and bow & arrows to take out bosses.
Boat Between Islands
The land of Oceanhorn requires boat travel. During the journey, you can shoot targets.
Rock out like a true guitar star
Guitar Hero Live turns everyone into a rock star with precision playing and roaring from the crowd. Feel like you are right on stage jamming, strumming, and hitting the whammy bar for that superstar effect. The “Live” installment allows the crowd to react to your performance. What better way is there to play the ultimate guitar game than on Apple TV? The game itself is a free download, but you’ll need the Guitar Hero Live controller to play, available for $59.99 from Amazon.
Play A Guitar With Apple TV
The full console experience of Guitar Hero Live is on Apple TV. That includes a guitar accessory with six buttons to press as you strum in response to the notes on screen.
Combos & Hero Power
Your goal is to string together consecutive note streaks. You build up your multiplier, and earn hero power with long streaks. Activate hero power to double your multiplier.
Multiplayer With Music Videos
Guitar Hero TV shows real music videos in the background. Compete in real time with others with a live leaderboard.
Tackle the toughest terrorists
Modern Combat 5 is a first-person shooter set in a modern-day environment where terrorists are trying to rule and governments are corrupt. Your task in the single player campaign is to figure out what’s really happening. Meanwhile, the multiplayer mode pits you against the toughest soldiers gaming has to offer, with customizable specialists and amazing weapons.
This game has one of the finest multiplayer action available, and the single-player action is just as good. The graphics are amazing, and the sound effects will put you right in the game. You can make your character truly your own, both through choosing a class and customizing your soldier’s skill set and weapons loadout.
Intense FPS Action
Take aim at this high powered first person shooter from Gameloft. Take on all kinds of missions in the lengthy campaign mode.
Special Ops Missions
In addition to the main combat, there are also special ops missions. They include sniper challenges.
Connect with others online to go head to head in shooter mayhem. Play free for all, team challenge, capture the flag, and more.
Can you survive after The Pulse?
The Afterpulse is an intense shooting adventure with both single-player and multiplayer options. Personalize your soldier, power up your weapons, choose your battle style, and prepare to fight. There is also a Training Mode where you can master your battle skills.
This console-quality title is an action-packed shooter with realistic graphics and sounds. There are 35 primary and secondary weapons that can be combined and evolved for more power. The different battle styles including assault, sniper, and handgun make this an extreme adventure.
Intense 3D Shooter Action
Take part in gorgeous shooter combat. Take aim, and fire upon your enemies with real time shadows, ragdoll physics, and advanced rendering.
Play Your Way
Upgrade your soldier's equipment, and pick the weapon that best suits your play style.
Real Time Online Multiplayer
Play in free for all or team death match with up to eight online players.
Play with games from Star Wars to Zootopia
I debated about including this one, since it seems pretty clear that Disney has abandoned ship on its Infinity 3.0 app for the Apple TV. With that said, there are still some play sets supported by the app, and it comes with an awesome (if short) Star Wars game without even getting the starter kit. And, what is supported looks and feels just like you’re on what Disney is choosing to refer to as a “traditional” console.
It's a good game, but don't rush out and buy the Starter Pack if you haven't already
Death Star Trench Run
Pilot Luke's X-Wing through the Death Star trench. This particular challenge is to protect friends from enemy TIE fighters. Tilt your device to pilot your ship, and tap the Play/Pause button to fire.
New Apple TV games
Some new Apple TV games have hit the scene, and I really wish there was a better way to tell you to search for these. Unfortunately, all I can tell you is to visit the tvOS App Store and search for them by name. Fortunately, with the latest update to the Apple TV, you can dictate your search.
- World Soccer Tournament 3D for TV, $0.99, Apple TV only
- Battleship War 3D, $1.99, Apple TV only
- Chess Free for TV, Free, Apple TV only
- DariusBurst -SP- for TV, $8.99, Apple TV only
This last one, Dash Masters, is universal. So, you can just click on the link below on your iOS device or to load it in iTunes, and it will magically appear in the Purchased tab of the tvOS App Store on your Apple TV.
