Duolingo Now Lets You Learn Languages by Chatting With Bots
With its impressive variety of lessons and tests, Duolingo has long been a great app for learning new languages. And now, it has become even greater with the addition of chatbots.
That’s right: Duolingo has made its first foray into the burgeoning world of artificial intelligence with the arrival of chatbots in its iOS app, ready to converse with you on your journey of language mastery without the risk of being judged or embarrassed for your silly mistakes or answers.
Say hola
Go to the Bots tab in Duolingo to engage in conversation in the language you’re learning with the app’s artificially intelligent interlocutors, which also say out load what they type. Just remember not to talk out of turn; wait for the bot to finish what it’s saying and then type your response.
Need help?
Don’t know what to say or how to answer? Just hit the Help Me Reply button above the keyboard to get automatic suggestions. Just bear in mind that you’re more likely to earn points for coming up with correct responses on your own.
Tap to translate
In many cases, you might be left wondering what the heck a bot is saying. Well, not to worry: Simply tap any words you don’t understand to find out what they mean.
Duolingo has a number of bots that you can talk to as your virtual language tutors, able to react differently to different possible answers. And while you’re learning, they are doing some learning of their own as well; they get smarter the more you practice with them.
Note that Duolingo’s chatbots are initially available for the Spanish, French, and German courses, and that at least three skills need to have been unlocked before they’re enabled in the app.
To start learning new languages with Duolingo’s chatbots, be sure to get the latest version of the app.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, Duolingo is available on the App Store for free.
