In Limited Test, Google Ads Now Showing Up on Apple News

Ads, Ads & More Ads
October 4, 2017

Oh no, here come the Google Ads.

A handful of partners are now being allowed to inject ads from Google’s DoubleClick For Publishers system into Apple News. The implementation could extend to all publishers before of the end of the year, according to Ad Age.

The first Google DoubleClick ads on Apple News are coming from partners like Condé Nast, Gannett, Time Inc., and CNN.

As one publishing partner explains:

Apple is just starting to do more for monetization. We’re starting to get excited about it, but can only design and develop ad inventory for Apple News once we have the right pipes in place.

Cupertino’s decision to allow Google ads in Apple News is an interesting development. It’s also one that comes with a few pitfalls.

Inviting a rival power like Google into Apple’s system raises issues, of course, including the privacy concerns that Apple prioritizes more than Google. Apple has made advertising in News difficult for many publishers, not only by forcing them into its ad platform to serve ads in the news app, but also by restricting the type of data it allows for use in ad targeting.

First introduced with iOS 9 in 2015, Apple News now has close to 50 million monthly U.S. visitors, according to ComScore.
