It's official: Disney Crossy Road is coming down the pike
So now we know the official answer to the deceptively simple question that has been bugging us since, well, a couple of days ago: Why did Donald Duck cross the road?
The teaser
A couple of days ago, a video featuring Donald Duck appeared as a sort of teaser for a Disney-themed version of the popular arcade hopper Crossy Road.
Titled “The Chicken vs. Donald Duck,” the video shows a chicken crossing the road unharmed and then Donald Duck attempting the same only to be hit by a passing vehicle. Notably, the entire video, including Donald Duck himself, is rendered in a colorful voxel art style that is unmistakably based on the look and feel of Crossy Road.
The trailer
Now, a new, similarly styled video has emerged, effectively confirming that, yes, a Disney-themed version of Crossy Road is just around the corner.
The new video features none other than Disney’s central character, Mickey Mouse, trying to outplay the chicken in crossing the road. It serves as the official teaser trailer for what is simply and aptly called Disney Crossy Road.
Crossing soon
Officially announced at the ongoing Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Disney Crossy Road features more than 100 Disney and Pixar characters adapted as 8-bit figurines crossing roads, in keeping with the graphics and gameplay of Crossy Road.
Crossings and characters
Created by Hipster Whale and released on iOS in November 2014, Crossy Road is something of a modernized Frogger. Essentially, it’s an endless arcade hopper that lets you control a chicken or another available playable character in hopes of getting as far as possible across roads, rivers, train tracks and more without getting run over or otherwise getting killed. Along the way, you can collect coins with which to unlock new characters, including other kinds of animals and avatars based on popular stereotypes and fictional figures, via the prize machine. Certain characters may also be unlocked via in-app purchase.
Disney Crossy Road is coming soon. But in celebration of the upcoming game’s announcement, the original Crossy Road game has just been updated with a new figurine of a chicken dressed as Mickey Mouse, which you can unlock and play with free of charge. Take a look:

Not the first time
This isn’t the first time that Disney has taken a popular mobile game and turned it into its own branded title. Disney has previously tapped the pioneering endless runner Temple Run for the official iOS games of two of its films, “Brave” and “Oz the Great and Powerful,” resulting in Temple Run: Brave and Temple Run: Oz.

Nor is this the first time that Crossy Road creator Hipster Whale has partnered with a high-profile company in the development of a new title. The studio has previously collaborated with Bandai Namco for the making of Pac-Man 256, an endless arcade maze game inspired by the glitched 256th level of Pac-Man.
