The Jaybird Freedom Wireless Headphones Sound Incredible

And the company’s fifth-generation device, the Freedom, hit the market on Monday. Sporting a new design, the earbuds are noticeably slimmer than anything previously from Jaybird. The speaker diameter is 20 percent smaller, but it can still produce a nice, pleasing sound range.

Along with being sweat resistant, the company wants to make sure that you will get the perfect fit. There are more than 12 different ways to customize the earbuds with a variety of different tips and surprisingly comfortable fins.

As a nice plus, the Freedom can be paired to two different Bluetooth devices simultaneously, making it easy to multitask with a number of different Apple products, including an iPhone and Apple Watch.

One of the best features of the new headphones is the companion MySound app. After downloading it to your iPhone, you can create a unique sound specific to your music taste. And unlike EQ settings or other audio tweaks, that profile is then saved directly to the Freedom so it will always be the same no matter what device you’re paired with. Even if you’re not familiar with audio settings, the app also offers a number of preset levels to select from.

Working with the app was quick and easy, and it’s a standout feature that helps differentiate the Freedom from other wireless buds on the market.

While I can easily say the Freedom is the best sounding and most comfortable set of Bluetooth earbuds I’ve ever used and is highly recommended, there are a few downsides.

The additional clip helps solve one of my biggest gripes about wireless headphones in general – poor battery life. But it definitely weighs down the thin and light earbuds, enough to make a big difference while I was running or working out. I usually left the clip at home or in my pocket.

That leads to another problem. The clip contains the micro-USB plug necessary to charge the device. So if it gets lost, you’re out of luck, and the device is useless since the built-in battery can’t be charged. So if you take the plunge and purchase the Freedom, make sure to keep an eagle eye on the small piece and make good use of the included carrying case.

The Freedom is available to purchase now for $199.95. There are four different colors to select from – gold, black, red, and blue.

While Jaybird has always focused only on wireless headphones, CMO Rene Oehlerking told me in a conversation last week that the company has been intrigued by rumors that the next-generation iPhone could possibly drop the ubiquitous 3.5mm headphone jack. Music fans would need to use wireless headphones or possibly a Lightning adapter.

“We’re pretty excited about the news,” he said. “Our core customer has always wanted to wireless, but we’re hoping that it will open up the technology to a broader audience and introduce more potential customers to our brand.”

And the Freedom headphones are the first Jaybird product to hit the market after the company was acquired by major accessory maker Logitech for $50 million back in April. The brand will continue to exist as a separate subsidiary of Logitech.

Jaybird founder and CEO Judd Armstrong told me that in late 2015, the company was finding it more difficult to grow and began to seek out other companies for possible partnerships. He was extremely impressed with how Logitech helped another audio player grow after acquiring it.

“We really liked how Logitech helped to grow and improved Ultimate Ears,” he said. “That really spoke to us and it made a lot of sense.”
