Apple's Battling Netflix Over Jennifer Aniston-Reese Witherspoon Drama
New drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon eyed.
Apple hopes two of the biggest names in Hollywood will soon star in one of the company’s first original content dramas. They’ll first have to get past Netflix however, according to The Financial Times.
Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon and “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston are working on a new series about morning talk shows. The new drama, announced earlier this year, is now looking for a place to land. Netflix and Apple are among those bidding for the right to air the series.
Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported Apple would spend upwards to $1 billion in the coming year to acquire and produce as many as 10 television shows.
Apple’s original content push is being directed by Eddy Cue, the company’s senior vice president for internet software and services. Reporting to Cue are former Sony Pictures Television co-presidents Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, who recently took over the programming responsibilities from the Apple Music team.
We could hear more about Apple’s entertainment plans during its fall event on Sept. 12. Perhaps we’ll see Aniston and Witherspoon alongside the “iPhone 8.”
