The New LEGO AR Studio App Uses Apple's ARKit, Set to Launch Soon

Augmented Reality
December 1, 2017

LEGO AR Studio is a new app coming soon to the App Store. It allows children to play with “virtually enhanced animated versions” of some of the company’s most popular sets. The app will feature six sets at launch.

Launching as soon as today, Dec. 1, LEGO AR Studio combines real-world scenes using Apple’s ARKit. Compatible sets at launch include Lego City Police Station 60047, Train Set 60052, and Fire Station 60110. Three Ninjago sets also are supported, including Green Dragon 70593, Cole’s Mech 70632, and Destiny’s Bounty 70618.

According to Tom Donaldson, the vice president of the Creative Play Lab at the LEGO Group (via Wired):

This app is a completely new play from LEGO, mixing the physical and digital. You hold an iPhone or an iPad in your hand, and you can see your surroundings on the screen — your room, your table, that sort of thing. It can sense surfaces, and you can place virtual LEGO models into your real world.

LEGO hasn’t said when the new app will launch. We also don’t know how much the app will cost or whether it will include in-app purchases. Stay tuned.
