Apple plans on introducing a lower priced iPad in 2018. The new 9.7-inch model could be priced as low as $259, according to DigiTimes.

The report notes the new device should be able to attract “more demand from price-oriented consumers, allowing Apple to maintain its present 10 million-unit tablet shipments a quarter.” By releasing a 9.7-inch iPad at around $250, Apple would also begin a “new wave of price competition among first-tier players,” including Samsung, Amazon.com, Huawei, and Lenovo.

Back in March, Apple introduced its current 9.7-inch tablet, simply called iPad. The model is available starting at $329 making it the least expensive 9.7-inch iPad to date.

If Apple does introduce a less expensive model next year, it’s likely to arrive during the second quarter of the year.
