If you use FaceTime, then you know that the nifty video calling app only works on Apple devices. So, what do you use when your best friend has an Android phone? Well, now you can use Google Duo, the video calling app that brings you together, across platforms.

The details

There is no lengthy sign-up process with Google Duo, you just register by entering your phone number and then verifying it with the code you receive via SMS.

With a minimalistic design, placing a call is super easy. Just open the app, select your contact, and that’s it. If your pal does not have Google Duo yet, there is a handy “invite” link that will send them a text message to obtain the app.

Google Duo covers any questionable reliability by switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data automatically without dropping the call. In addition, with your privacy in mind, calls are end-to-end encrypted.

The app also provides a video preview of who is calling you, as long as they are on your contact list. This feature is called Knock Knock. Although you will not be able to see the person you are calling until they answer, they will be able to see you. This feature can also be disabled easily within the app settings.

So, what does this mean for Apple’s FaceTime? Well, for those whose friends and family all use Apple devices, probably nothing. But, for others who are mixed between Apple and Android phones, it could certainly have a big impact. What are your thoughts?

Google Duo is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and available on the App Store for free. Note that data charges may apply, depending on your carrier.
