Nostalgia in the mobile gaming world is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it leads to such pleasant surprises as Pokémon Go and Super Mario Run. On the other, it results in half-baked ports like the just-released Mega Man Mobile 1-6 for iOS.
As their names suggest, Mega Man Mobile 1-6 are mobile ports of the first six games in Capcom’s classic Mega Man series of action platformer games featuring the titular heroic robot. Fans of the original games as well as people interested in playing them on their iPhones and iPads will understandably be tempted to download the new iOS versions right away.
But if you count yourself in either demographic, be warned that, at least going by early reactions from critics and players alike, the release of Mega Man Mobile 1-6 is a far from being cause for much celebration.
The general disapproval toward Mega Man Mobile 1-6 is mainly rooted in what appears to be a substandard implementation of onscreen controls and a noticeably low frame rate. These two issues are hinted at in the official trailer for the games:
Nevertheless, Capcom touts Mega Man Mobile 1-6 as being “optimized” for mobile devices.
It’s also worth noting that each of the games features a choice of two difficulty modes and a number of settings. In each, you can choose between normal mode, where you have unlimited continues and you can restart from the last checkpoint you’re able to pass before Mega Man dies, and hard mode, where you have only a limited number of continues and fewer checkpoints. You can also adjust the sound, vibration, attack mode, gameplay speed, and button configuration.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, Mega Man Mobile 1-6 are available now on the App Store for $1.99 each. But for the aforementioned reasons, download them at your own risk.
