Unlike in a certain wildly popular fantasy series, winter is not coming in Moomin Quest, a tap-based arcade adventure game based on the classic books by the Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson. It’s up to you then to help the Moomins and guide them across Moominvalley in order to solve the mystery of their lost winter.

Developed by the Swedish independent studio Odd Comet Games, Moomin Quest is an arcade adventure game that challenges you to muster up a combination of quick thinking and quick tapping. In the game, you have to tap tiles so as to clear paths for the Moomin characters as they carry on their journey through Moominvalley to find The Lady of the Cold and find out why winter has gone missing.

As one of the Moomin characters, whether it’s kind Moomin or spunky Little My, you have to get past skill-based levels to get to The Lady of the Cold and get to the bottom of why winter is missing this year.

Journey through Moominvalley

Go on a journey across Moominvalley by tapping on the ground tiles as they move from the top toward the bottom of the screen. It’s not as easy as it sounds, though, since different tiles require different actions: Some tiles need to be tapped and held, while others require multiple taps. There are even tiles that can become invisible and there are others that can spontaneously combust.

On the surface, Moomin Quest looks little more than child’s play, as if it asks nothing from players beyond tapping here and there. But it’s actually a deceptively simple yet quite challenging game, as it calls for fast thinking and fast acting, given that the variety of tiles to be tapped require different types of responses. Of course, its Moomin trappings only add to its appeal to children of all ages.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, Moomin Quest is available now on the App Store for free, with in-app purchases for in-game currency and ad removal.
