Apple's Competitors
August 23, 2017

Stepping up before Apple’s unveiling of the “iPhone 8” sometime next month, Samsung has just announced the Galaxy Note 8 at an event in New York City.

The dual camera setup allows for Portrait Mode-like images. But with Samsung's Live Fpcus features, users can adjust the level of background blur.

The highlight of the Note 8 is the 6.3-inch AMOLED screen with an interesting 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Samsung is calling it the Infinity Display because of its near bezel free design.

Along with the included S Pen stylus, another major new feature is the dual rear camera setup. It will allow for a 2x optical zoom and optical image stabilization.

Much like the Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 Plus, the handset will offer a Live Focus feature that blurs the background while the main subject is in focus. But users will be able to adjust the level of background blur after the picture is taken.

With the optional DeX Station, users can connect to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and do work on a bigger screen.

Available in black and gray, the handset will be can be preordered starting tomorrow with official arrival on Friday, Sept. 16. It will cost between $930 and $960 depending on the carrier in the United States.

While the Note 8 currently looks to be the best smartphone available, the rumored specs of the “iPhone 8” favorably compare to Samsung’s latest device. And then there’s the little matter of whether customers will return to Samsung after the fiery Note 7 fiasco.
