If you miss the days of the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis consoles, we’ve got good news for you. The creators of the iconic classic Sonic the Hedgehog have begun to release a collection of titles that will bring those glory days of gaming back. With the first batch of Sega Forever games, new and veteran fans can recreate their favorite gaming experiences right on their iOS devices.
The Sega Forever Collection Is Landing Soon on the App Store
The first batch of Sega Forever games is scheduled to be released on the App Store tomorrow, June 22. Each game is free to play, with ad support. You can play the games offline but still save your progress in the cloud. Bluetooth controller support is baked in, and so are leader boards.
If you want to play the games without interruptions from ads, remembering those glorious hours of uninterrupted play in your basement, each game includes a small in-app purchase to remove the advertisements.
What Games Are In the Sega Forever Collection?
The first batch of titles are Mega Drive and Genesis classics, and there will be five of them. You’ll be able to download and play these wonderfully retro games:
- Sonic the Hedgehog, the 1991 household classic that has remained at the forefront of hearts and minds since inception
- Phantasy Star II, the long-time fan-favorite RPG from 1989
- Comix Zone and Kid Chameleon, two American titles developed by SEGA’s in-house studio, STI
- Altered Beast, the original Genesis pack-in title, a beat ‘em up set in Ancient Greece that represents a weird and wonderful segment of the SEGA catalog that is ripe for rediscovery
Each game will be available to download for free on the App Store, and will be accompanied by an iMessage sticker pack.
This Is Just the Beginning
Sega doesn’t plan on resting on its laurels after the first batch of games. The blockbuster game developer says the collection will continue to grow with more releases coming every two weeks. They’ll include official emulations and ported games from all of Sega’s console eras. Each game is being carefully adapted specifically for mobile devices, but will stay true and faithful to its origins. The difference is, you won’t have to blow dust out of the cartridge anymore.
