Starz network launches its own standalone streaming service
Cord-cutters now have another option for premium content, thanks to paid-cable network Starz entering the growing industry. The network has launched its own standalone streaming service today, April 5, with a feature that is sure to please those who like to take their media on the go: the ability to download content with virtually no limits.
The service costs $8.99 per month, and provides access to more than 2,400 selections each month. Hollywood hits and popular movies like “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” are in the Starz catalog, along with original programming like the hit series “Outlander.”
Starz has entered the market today with an enormous value proposition for consumers. Our programing will now be more widely available to the 20 million broadband only homes of cord nevers, cord cutters and cord shavers, including Millennials and other underserved consumers who need other viable subscription service options.
- Chris Albrecht, Starz CEOThe new Starz app is available on the App Store for iOS devices, as well as the tvOS App Store. On the Apple TV, Starz fully supports universal search through the Siri Remote. There’s no free trial, unfortunately, but the service is less expensive than rivals HBO and Showtime.
If you are already a Starz subscriber through a cable or satellite television package, you can authenticate in the app to stream or download content within the app.
In celebration of the new streaming service’s launch, Starz will make the second season premiere episode of “Outlander” available for viewing or download on April 7, two days before its official broadcast at 9 p.m. on April 9. That’s definitely an interesting hook to get people signed on quickly.
It’s great to see new options for cord-cutters, and Starz is a terrific addition to the industry. Nielsen has touted Starz as the most-watched family of pay television networks in the United States, and the network has an immense catalog of content to provide viewers with.
