Navigation company TomTom has just unveiled a new app for iPhone users. TomTom GO Mobile is a big shift for the company.
A new look and more
The new app.
Previously, there were a number of region-specific apps available to download on the App Store that cost around $50 each. But the company is moving to the ever-popular freemium model.
Anyone who downloads the app can receive navigation and traffic information for up to 50 miles of travel per month. At the start of each month, 50 free miles are added to the app.
After that, you’ll need to upgrade to a unlimited subscription to keep using the app.
The world at your fingertips
Instead of having to purchase an app from a specific region, you can download map information from a number of countries and locations worldwide. After you download a map, you can continue to receive directions offline and without an Internet connection.
You can also view detailed and specific traffic information along your route or in your general area. Users can view how fast traffic is moving and, in many instances, what is causing the issue.
The app features the same UI as the navigation company’s dedicated GPS units. Searching for a destination is quick and easy. Drivers can also take a look at a number of different POIs - like restaurants, gas stations, and more - on their route.
Existing app users
There is good news for users of existing TomTom apps. All of the apps, which covered different locations around the globe, will continue to work and receive map updates. They will also receive a free upgrade in TomTom GO Mobile with three years of unlimited driving.
TomTom GO Mobile is designed for the iPhone and can be downloaded now on the App Store for free. You can upgrade to unlimited use by purchasing a one-year or three-year subscription for $19.99 or $49.99, respectively.
While free options like Apple’s built-in Maps or Google Maps are great choices for many users, others prefer TomTom’s interface, detailed maps, and traffic information. And the new app is a great way to try out the product and see if it is right for you.
