Watch out AT&T, Verizon's Planning a TV Streaming Service Too

A Verizon TV streaming service could launch as early as this summer. The service would come as companies continue to face “growing pressure to provide a cheaper, smaller package of TV networks to viewers who are turned off by a glut of programming available on traditional cable packages,” according to Bloomberg.

So far, there are few details about Verizon’s (OTT) internet television service, except that it will compete with existing services like Dish’s Sling TV and AT&T’s DirecTV Now. The live, over-the-internet TV service would be a first for Verizon, according to folks familiar with the plans.

What’s unclear is whether the Verizon TV streaming service will include live channels, video on demand (VOD), or both. It’s also unknown whether the service will be exclusive for Verizon customers or available to anyone. Almost certainly, the service will be available across multiple platforms, including Apple TV, iOS, and Roku.

Verizon isn’t the only company looking to join the OTT parade this year.

Comcast’s expected to launch Xfinity Instant TV during the third-quarter of 2017. Services from Hulu and YouTube also arrive this year.

It will be interesting to see how Verizon fits into the emerging OTT market. I say, the more, the merrier. As the number of available services increase, the fees for those services are likely to fall, and that’s a big win for consumers.
