AT&T Mobility CEO: An Apple-Developed New SIM Card Could Mean Thinner, Lighter iPhone

June 5, 2011
Another snippet of information seems to have come out of AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega's D9 interview. In an article recently published by All Things Digital's Ina Fried, Vega noted that AT&T is "working with the industry" to introduce smaller, thinner SIM cards in smart phones. He added: "I think that probably will happen." Already, a new Apple-developed SIM format has been approved by Orange (a French carrier). The proposed SIM card is rumored to be even smaller than the micro-SIM which currently features in the iPhone 4, original iPad and iPad 2. Vega's comments suggest that AT&T may be adopting the new format, too, which could result in thinner future iOS devices. Previously, many thought that Apple might consider introducing an integrated-SIM within a future iPhone handset. However, it would appear that the Cupertino, CA company has moved away from this idea, and is instead planning on simply reducing the size of the iPhone and iPad's SIM card. We'll keep you posted.
