Now Showing On Your New iPad: Movie Trailers With Retina Graphics
March 23, 2012
Immediately after the third-generation iPad was announced last March 7, Apple rolled out updates in quick succession for a lot of its own iOS apps. The updates were released mainly to enhance the apps with native support for undoubtedly the new device's most prominent feature, its 9.7-inch, 2048 × 1536, 264 PPI Retina display. Those somewhat perplexing numbers can be summarized in just one nonce word: "resolutionary." Included in the group of Apple apps promptly updated for the new iPad's "resolutionary" display were GarageBand, iBooks and the iWork application suite. In addition, the Retina-ready iPhoto for iOS was launched. Not to be left out, too, was iMovie. What did get left out, though, was Apple's other movie app, iTunes Movie Trailers.
You'd think that since it's heavily invested in visuals, iTunes Movie Trailers would be among the first apps to get the Retina iPad treatment. That wasn't the case, though, as it took Apple a couple of weeks after the new iPad announcement to equip iTunes Movie Trailers for iPad with support for Retina graphics. Beginning today, you can now watch trailers of past films and upcoming cinema attractions on your new iPad in higher than normal definition, taking advantage of Apple's Retina technology.
Released just hours ago, the update actually adds nothing more than the much-awaited Retina support for the new iPad. If graphics-heavy apps indeed make the new iPad noticeably warmer than usual, then expect this new version of iTunes Movie Trailers to heat it up a bit more. Expect your data consumption to suffer, too, from the upgraded HD streaming of trailers, in which case it's better to use the app while on a more reliable Wi-Fi connection.
As always, iTunes Movie Trailers is available in the App Store for free. For sure, watching the trailer for "The Avengers" on the app now looks even more marvelous.
