Facebook Outbids Twitter On Instagram: Is Dorsey Taking It Too Hard?

April 16, 2012

The founders of Instagram, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, are very lucky guys. As I’m sure you all know, last Monday Facebook announced their acquisition of Instagram.

Now, the blogosphere is ripe with chatter of Facebook outbidding Twitter for the photo sharing company. And, not only that, but Twitter founder Jack Dorsey stopped using Instagram the day of the deal, and that has everyone’s brows arched.

According to The New York Times:

Mr. Systrom may have lost one connection in the deal: Mr. Dorsey of Twitter. His company, according to several people briefed on the matter, had expressed interest in buying Instagram in recent months. Mr. Dorsey once used Instagram daily to send photos to Twitter, but he has not been back since the deal was announced, perhaps a sign that he is not happy to see it in the hands of a competitor. A Twitter spokeswoman declined to comment.

Coincidence? Who knows. I mean, the guy is busy with not only Twitter, but Square as well. I’m not one tenth as busy as Dorsey, and I hardly find time to post a Kelvin-filtered photo of my cat (but, believe me, I get around to it).

The real question is: What does the future of Instagram hold with Facebook? There are definitely privacy concerns in the back of our minds, but we can’t help but think about the fact that this was a smart move for the Instagram team (especially monetarily).

But I can’t help but wonder: How would it have been different if Twitter had outbid Facebook?
