AppAdvice Game Of The Week For July 9, 2012

July 9, 2012

Every week, our staff will handpick a game from the past seven days that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These games will always be from a wide variety of genres, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and can’t quite put it down. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy, and happy gaming!

Outwitters

Our game pick this week is Outwitters from One Man Left (the guys behind the ever-popular Tilt to Live) that we told you about earlier this month. If you’re a fan of Tilt to Live, then you definitely don’t want to miss this game.

So what exactly is Outwitters? It’s a turn-based strategy game where you must outwit your enemy in a battle of minions. This is only available as a multiplayer game, though, so brace yourself for some fun with other players through Game Center or even pass-and-play style.

Each player will start out with some minions on the board, and each one of them can perform two different tasks. The goal is to destroy the enemy’s base, of course. Whenever you perform a task, it will cost “wit.” This way, players can store up wit for later use, or they can even run out before they have a chance to move all of their minions. Your wit can also be used to spawn new minions on the board, though they will cost a specific amount of points, and they can move and attack if you have enough to spare. This is basically where the strategic part of the game comes from, so make sure to use your wit carefully!

There are some in-app purchases in Outwitters, which will feature different minions and boards. Unlike other freemium games, this one doesn’t include any coin upgrades or ads, which is great. You would only get the in-app purchases if you want different skins and characters.

Outwitters will definitely keep you coming back for more with the beautiful Retina graphics and fun, challenging gameplay.

What are you waiting for? The game is free, so make sure to download it today! It’s what all of our staff members are raving about lately.

Honorable Mention Hasta La Muerte

Our Honorable Mention this week is a completely unique platformer that follows Pac-Man rather than Super Mario Bros. In Hasta la Muerte, you are an emissary of Death, and you will be saving souls before they suffer an eternity of pain.

Yes, the story of the game is rather dark, but the art style is very distinctive with hand-drawn illustrations. The game features an open level design and you will control your character with the movement joystick on the left and accelerate button on the right.

Even though you’re trying to save souls, not all of them will be savable! The ones that can be rescued will be white, and you will have to reach them before the counter on them runs out. If you run into a black soul, it will become “lost” and begin to chase you around. If one of these evil beings touches you, one of your lives will be lost. Since you only get three, you have to be careful!

To enhance your character, there will be Soulpets to grant special abilities to you. These will give you cool powers, such as walking faster or even sneaking around. Passages will be available that souls can’t go in to, so make sure to use them strategically. Each level will have the goal of saving a certain number of souls and then reaching the exit before you can progress.

Each level will grade you based on how many you rescued, how often you were hit, and how long it took you to complete the level. Hasta la Muerte has 30 levels for you to go through and explore, but you are also able to revisit them to find new things you missed and even get new Soulpet powers. And don’t forget about boss fights!

Hasta la Muerte is definitely a one-of-a-kind platformer, and you should not miss it if you are looking for something fun to play this week. It is even highly recommended by our own Juli Clover.
