Facebook’s updated iOS app seems to be a hit. In less than a month after its launch, user ratings for the app have jumped from 1.5 stars to 4 stars.
The older version of the app, built around HTML5, was widely criticized for being enormously slow and buggy. But Facebook built the update app using Apple’s iOS SDK. Facebook’s Platform Manager Doug Purdy talked to TechCrunch about the issues with HTML5:
Johnson discussed the mistake of building Facebook's mobile apps around HTML5, saying "When we embedded it in our native apps, the performance wasn't what our users expected or what we were happy with either. The features were there but it didn't feel like the experience we wanted to use, that wanted to build."He also said Facebook may return to HTML5 on iOS when the platform improves. And there was also more good news for Facebook users. Johnson said Facebook plans on releasing updates to the iOS app every two weeks to keep adding features requested from users. Version 5.0 of the Facebook app is universal and designed for both the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad. It can be downloaded for free in the App Store. I definitely am pleased with the redesign and probably like the new photo viewing features the most. Hopefully, Facebook will continue to quickly innovate the app. Source: TechCrunch
