The Sphero robotic ball is easily one of my favorite iOS accessories ever. And Orbotix is continuing to come up with new and fun ways to use the system.
At CES 2013 in Las Vegas, the company announced a new augmented reality game, The Rolling Dead. With Sphero’s help, gamers will enter the dark side and battle the walking dead. The Sphero will allow players to shoot fireballs at the virtual zombies. The app, pictured in action, will be available in the App Store early this year.
The first augmented reality game for the Sphero, Sharky the Beaver, is also getting an update. Users can now enjoy new gameplay and interactions with the beaver, including multiple levels of cupcake tossing. The app is available for both the iPad and iPhone/iPod touch.
Sphero’s partnership with viral star Nyan Cat is also going to get even better. Nyan Cat – Space Party! hit the App Store a few weeks ago and allows users to control the kitty through the depths of space and various galaxies. Nyan Cat shoots yummy bacon to destroy foes while collecting lollipops.
Chris Torres, the creator of Nyan Cat, will be on hand at CES to show off the app and preview an augmented reality Sphero and Nyan Cat app that should be released sometime this year.
Third-party support for Sphero is also growing. One of the newest apps that uses Sphero as a controller, Zombie Rollers, is now available to download in the App Store. Pass the Sphero, a digital version of hot potato, will feature multi-player fun and will be available later this month.
You can get started with Sphero by purchasing the ball for $129.99 at Amazon.com and other retailers.
