Following 500px And Vine Porn Controversy, Tumblr For iOS Gets New Mature Rating
January 31, 2013
The official iOS app of popular social blogging platform Tumblr has just received another update.
Apparently, the app's new update contains nothing more than "small bug fixes."
But there's actually one other change that, although not stated in the update's release notes, bears greater importance than mere patches. And that other change is the revised age rating for the app.
If you download or update to the new version of Tumblr for iOS, you will be prompted to confirm that you are 17 or over. This is on account of the app's age-restricted content.
That much is also stated in the information section of Tumblr's updated App Store page, which warns about "Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity" in the app. As noted by The Verge, Tumblr's App Store page used to carry an age rating of 4 and up.
Indeed, it's quite easy to find sexual content or nudity in Tumblr. But then again, the same can be said about Apple's own mobile Safari, or about any Web browsing app for that matter.
Of course, the real story here is that Tumblr appears to have gained a mature rating following the recent controversy over pornography in 500px and Vine.
It's unclear, though, whether Tumblr applied the new rating proactively or did so only after receiving complaints of NSFW material from users.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 5.0 or later, the new and age-restricted version of Tumblr for iOS is available now in the App Store for free.
