Better Late Than Never: Path Gains Support For Hashtags In Moments
March 27, 2013
A little over a week ago, Flickr for iOS was updated with support for hashtags. Now, the popular social networking app Path has been updated with the same long-overdue feature.
As I noted in my post about the recently updated Flickr app, "The use of hashtags as a means of grouping posts was established on Twitter back in 2007. But since then, it has been integrated into other social media sites, including Tumblr, Google+, and Flickr’s biggest rival, Instagram. And it’s said to be coming soon to Facebook as well."
And now, hashtag support has finally found its way to Path. As the app's patch notes and its co-founder and CEO, Dave Morin, put it: #betterlatethannever.
Beginning with the new version of Path, you can now add hashtags to your posts aka "moments" in the app. As might be expected, tapping on a hashtag immediately initiates a search for moments that match the hashtag. Note, though, that unlike on Twitter, the subsequent search not only yields moments that bear the hashtag itself. Rather, it also shows moments that contain the tag sans the hash. For example, tapping the #cute hashtag results in a stream of moments that either contain the #cute hashtag itself or just the word "cute." Interestingly, this is also the case in the recently hashtag-enabled Flickr for iOS. The newly hashtag-enabled Path also includes some bug fixes and performance improvements. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 5.0 or later, Path is available in the App Store for free. Earlier this month, Path received its big 3.0 update, which added support for messaging, stickers, and an in-app shop for premium stuff. Update: Path has reached out to us, effectively acknowledging the hashtag search behavior I've described above as a bug. Path says that it's "going to be fixing that bug in hashtag search with v 3.0.3 so it will only search for hashtagged content, not just a generic search."
