Google Reader Is Dead, Long Live These Alternatives
March 14, 2013
We’re pretty sure that many of you are unhappy with the news that Google Reader is going away later this year. With this in mind, we offer some alternatives for iOS users.
Zite, Universal, Free
This popular news app curates stories according to your interests. Better still, it learns what you read to make future postings even more personal.
News, Universal, $0.99
This app pulls content from some of the biggest names in news reporting. This includes, but is not limited to, CNN, The New York Times, and Reuters.
Reeder, iPhone, $2.99
As Aldrin Calimlim already confirmed, one of the most favored Google Reader apps for iOS isn't going anywhere, even after Google's service is shutdown. This is great to know and we can't wait to see what plans Reeder's creators have going forward.
TLDR Reader, iPhone, Free
This basic app delivers news from over 100 feeds in 14 news categories. The best feature: stories are presented in short summaries so that you can get through them quickly.
xFeed RSS Reader, Universal, Free
Described as the "fastest, leanest," and "most user friendly" reader around, this free app offers news from favorite websites. Most stories are presented in text only format, although the occasional photo does show up.
Flipboard, Universal, Free
Perhaps the most popular app on our list is Flipboard. Originally launched only on iPad, the universal app is fully customizable and includes content from varied resources.
Finally, a bonus pick:
Watchup, iPad, Free
As I reported in February, Watchup is like Zite, except that instead of text, it presents videos that showcase the news of the day. By definition, this prevents it from being considered a news reader, but it is still cool nonetheless.
Google Reader ends service on July 1, 2013. What alternatives do you plan on using?
