Google Outbids Apple In Acquisition Of News-Summarizing App Wavii

April 24, 2013
A month ago, Yahoo acquired the popular news-summarizing app Summly for a reported $30 million. Now, another Internet giant has acquired another popular news-summarizing app for just about the same amount. According to a new report by TechCrunch:
Google has finally closed the deal on Wavii, a natural language processing startup, for a price that is more than $30 million, we’re hearing from a legitimate source.
But perhaps a more interesting tidbit in TechCrunch's report is the revelation that Google outbid Apple on the acquisition. Apparently, Apple planned on tapping Wavii's capabilities for the improvement of Siri. As for Google, it intends to integrate Wavii into Knowledge Graph, its semantic search knowledge base. Be that as it may, the app remains available in the App Store. When Yahoo picked up Summly, the app was immediately pulled from the App Store. But its core features were eventually added to Yahoo's official iOS app. Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 5.1 or later, Wavii is available in the App Store for free. In her review of the app here on AppAdvice, Christine wrote: "Wavii is a different way to look at the news. Rather than just being a traditional aggregator, Wavii spruces things up by turning the news feed into a stream of easier-to-read status updates." [gallery link="file" order="DESC"]
