May 16, 2013
Rovio has announced that it will be teaming up with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring its animated, 3-D Angry Birds adaptation to theaters on July 1, 2016. While the news first hit the Web in a Twitter post, Rovio's website was soon updated with a press release expanding on the original announcement. Here's the tweet: While an Angry Birds movie has been in the cards for a while now, no distribution partner had yet been announced. "Sony impressed us with their great attitude, determination, and professionalism," said Rovio CEO Mikael Hed in the company's press release. "They convinced us that we have found the right partners and team to help us market and distribute our first motion picture." The film will be produced by John Cohen (producer of "Despicable Me"), and David Maisel, executive producer of "Iron Man 2," will advise on the film as executive producer.
