Google Launches Redesigned Zagat App Ahead Of Google+ Local Shutdown

July 30, 2013
A few days ago, Google announced that it would be retiring Google+ Local on Aug. 7. In its announcement, the company suggested the Google Maps app, which was recently updated with a new Explore section along with native iPad support, as a replacement for the soon-to-be-deprecated app. As it turns out, though, a more dedicated replacement has just been launched by Google in the form of the new Zagat app. The new Zagat app is essentially a redesigned and relaunched version of the official iOS app of Zagat Survey, the restaurant rating service acquired by Google in 2011. If you can't see the video embedded above, please click here. With the app, you can expect to discover the best and most notable local restaurants, bars, cafes, and clubs. Its key features include:
  • Expert-selected lists of places to go for nearly any occasion, mood, and craving
  • Reviews and ratings you can trust
  • Constant stream of entertaining articles and videos delivered throughout the day
  • Advanced search tools to help you find exactly what you want
  • Menus to read before you go
  • Reservations through OpenTable
Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 5.1 or later, the new Zagat app is available now in the App Store for free. Note that the app initially covers the following nine cities, with expansion to other cities already underway: Austin, Boston, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. As for Google+ Local, which was originally called Google Places and updated with Zagat integration last year, it appears to have already been removed from the App Store ahead of its service discontinuation on Aug. 7.
