The Auris Skye Brings AirPlay Support To Older 30-Pin Music Docks

September 16, 2013
Don’t throw out your speaker with a 30-pin dock just yet. While a number of solutions have added Bluetooth to older systems, an interesting new Kickstarter project from Auris promises to add AirPlay support. Along with Apple’s music streaming protocol, the skye also features DLNA support for Android and Windows devices. If you’re out of range from a wireless network, the Skye’s "WiFi direct mode" even allows music lovers to stream directly to the system without a router. Here’s a quick video about the project. Click here if you can’t see it. At least in my experience, the top advantage of AirPlay is its range. Instead of having to stay within 33 feet of a Bluetooth speaker, you can stream music anywhere your wireless network reaches, which really opens up the possibilities. For a $64 pledge right now, you can snag a white or black version of the Skye. Even if you don’t have an older 30-pin music dock, you can purchase an optional cable for $10 that can be used with any speaker’s AUX port. With 37 days to go, the project is well on its way to being funded with more than $19,000 pledged on a goal of $56,000. All project rewards are estimated to ship in December.
