Google Maps SDK For iOS Updated With 64-Bit Support, Marker Opacity And More

November 20, 2013
A couple of months ago, the Google Maps SDK for iOS was updated to officially support iOS 7, thereby dropping support for iOS 5 and requiring iOS 6.0 or later. Now, the software development kit has been updated with support for Apple's A7 64-bit system on a chip, which is built into iPhone 5s, iPad Air, and iPad mini with Retina display. As noted by Google:
The Google Maps SDK for iOS now supports 64-bit architectures. Both 32 and 64 bit binaries are built into the single GoogleMaps framework. The correct binary will be selected by Xcode based on your build settings.
In addition, the SDK has been updated with marker opacity, minimum and maximum zoom restrictions, and the following fixes:
  • Info windows and tappable regions now rotate correctly with markers.
  • Padding on a GMSMapView is no longer clamped to its bounds (useful if setting padding on an initially zero-sized map).
  • Copyright information now animates when changing GMSMapView size or padding.
  • Info windows are removed if their GMSMarker is removed from a GMSMapView.
  • My Location dot uses the last known location information when enabled.
  • Resolved two rare race conditions that were causing crashes.
  • Resolved an issue where retain cycles were causing memory leaks on GMSMapView and GMSPanoramaView.
If you're a developer and you wish to integrate the latest Google Maps enhancements into your iOS app, go ahead and download the latest version of the Google Maps SDK for iOS (version 1.6) from the Google Developers portal. Google Maps, of course, competes with Apple's very own Maps, which, according to a recent report, has become the preferred mapping app for most iOS users despite its rocky start.
