One new biography to have launched in the iBookstore takes a look at the life and work of one of Apple's most interesting, influential, and charismatic executives: Jony Ive. Called "Jony Ive" and available to download for $11.99, the new e-book traces Ive's involvement with the development of Apple's iPhone, its iPad, and his relationship with co-founder and former chief executive officer, Steve Jobs.
The e-book is penned by Leander Kahney, author of several popular Apple-related books ("The Cult of Mac," "Cult of iPod," and "Inside Steve's Brain") and editor of the Mac and iOS news website, Cult of Mac. Kahney also worked as a managing editor for Wired News, and in his role he had the opportunity to meet Jony Ive, Apple's senior vice president of Design, on a number of occasions.
His book, then, is based on these brief meetings and on interviews with Ive's former colleagues. As outlined in the blurb of Kahney's new e-book:
Steve Jobs returned to Apple as CEO with the unenviable task of turning around the company he had founded. One night, Jobs discovered a scruffy British designer toiling away at Apple’s corporate headquarters, surrounded by hundreds of sketches and prototypes. It was then that Jobs realized he had found a talent who could reverse the company’s long decline. That young designer was Jony Ive. Jony Ive’s collaboration with Jobs would produce some of the world’s most iconic technology products, including the iMac, iPod, iPad, and iPhone. The designs have not only made Apple a hugely valuable company, they’ve overturned entire industries, built a loyal fan base, and created a globally powerful brand.Gizmodo is offering readers an excerpt taken from "Jony Ive," which discusses Ive's work on designing the iPad. Of course, this isn't the first significant biography of an Apple executive to have reached iDevice users. Besides Kahney's previous e-books, an influential biography of the late Steve Jobs penned by Walter Isaacson proved to be incredibly popular back in 2011, and has spawned both an official Manga adaptation in Japan along with an anticipated film adaptation. There has even been a so-called "profound" biography published by none other than Steve Jobs' former girlfriend. As mentioned, Leander Kahney's "Jony Ive" can be downloaded in the iBookstore for $8.99, and is also available in a hardcover book version at Amazon for just under $17.
