The Ultimate Arcade Racer Franchise Is Back With Ridge Racer Slipstream For iOS

December 19, 2013

Remember Ridge Racer? The popular arcade game first appeared in 1993, and now in celebration of the series reaching its two-decade milestone Ridge Racer has made the leap to iOS in a brand new app. Called Ridge Racer Slipstream, the application can be downloaded in the App Store for $2.99 and is optimized for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Ridge Racer is actually the longest-running racing franchise in history, and as such it's not surprising to note that this isn't the series' first appearance in the App Store. Back in 2009, Ridge Racer Accelerated offered iDevice users a Ridge Racer experience for iOS, and the game can still be downloaded for $5.99. However, this app hasn’t been updated since 2011, and it doesn’t support 4-inch screens or Apple’s Retina display.

Instead, iDevice users looking to enjoy a Ridge Racer experience for iOS are advised to check out Ridge Racer Slipstream. The game offers users a total of 12 different machines to race, along with more than 300 different combinations which allow drivers to create the perfect vehicle; there's also a career mode of gameplay, an arcade mode (of course!), and users can engage with the wider Ridge Racer community through linking their Facebook account with the app.

But that's not all. As developer Namco explains in the game's release notes, further features include:

  • 10 unique venues and 20 courses for head to head racing.
  • 108 racing competitions across 6 Grand Prix Series.
  • Push the limits of high end graphics in beautifully detailed locations: Lost Ruins, Industrial Drive, Harbor Line, Old Central, and others.

Do you feel up to the challenge of a Ridge Racer race? If so, take a look at the new application now: Ridge Racer Slipstream can be downloaded in the App Store for $2.99 and is optimized for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

For a number of other apps that snuck into the App Store before iTunes Connect is set to close for the holidays on Dec. 21, check out The Shadow Sun, Abducted, and Colossatron: Massive World Threat.
