After All That, Nintendo Confirms: No Games For iOS, But A 'Service App' Is Incoming
The Nintendo-iOS enigma has finally reached its conclusion - well, sort of. During a recent strategy briefing, the Japanese developer and publisher confirmed once again that Nintendo “mini-games” aren’t going to reach iDevices. Rather, the company is planning on launching “service apps” across multiple platforms in order to better communicate with smart device-owning Nintendo gamers.
In a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, in which the publication live blogged Nintendo’s address, news concerning the company’s plans surfaced online.
Besides taking a 50 percent pay cut for four months, president Satoru Iwata also announced Nintendo’s intention of bringing service apps to iOS and Android. The move, it’s hoped, will help the company “make connections with customers,” however as of this writing details concerning the applications aren’t known.
The bottom line, though, is that Nintendo is indeed coming to the App Store, but not in the way we’d originally hoped.
Besides confirming its move to mobile, Nintendo also announced an on-demand gaming service that’ll allow Wii U players to access Nintendo DS titles, and a health device (one that’s non-wearable, we might add) is set to launch from the company next year. It’s sink or swim time for Nintendo, and even though Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon aren’t set to launch in the App Store this time around, it doesn’t mean we won’t see the titles reach our iDevices in years to come.
