Cydia Tweak: How To Bring The Mac Messages App To Your Non-OS X Desktop Computer

January 30, 2014

Remote Messages, a jailbreak-powered Messages app service for non-OS X computer users, might not be a direct port of Apple’s Messages application, but it nevertheless offers the next best solution. You can pick up the jailbreak tweak for $3.99 in the Cydia Store, and once configured, users can send and receive iMessages from within a Web browser running on any desktop operating system.

Apple’s Messages app provides users with a one-stop location for iMessages, regardless of whether you’re using the application on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. In fact, I go between all three iterations of the app each and every day, and the service works incredibly well. But what if you don’t have an OS X-powered desktop computer? Though Apple hasn’t made a Windows or Linux version of its Messages app available, Remote Messages can help recreate a similar experience within a Web browser, regardless of the OS.

You need to configure the jailbreak tweak iDevice-side first, and as iDownloadBlog explains, this involves setting a username and password, entering the IP address of your computer’s Web browser, and authenticating the process using your credentials. Once you’re all set up, though, Remote Messages offers a Web-based messaging experience that appears to replicate Apple’s Messages app to a surprisingly accurate degree.

Features include support for both iMessages and SMS messages, picture messaging, file attachments, typing notifications, drafts support, a search tool, contact pictures, themes, and information such as your iPhone’s battery level, its Wi-Fi connection, and its signal strength.

The publication concludes:

The setup process is reasonable, the features are plenty, the connection was stable for me and it didn’t seem to impact my battery life too much. But the upside here seems to be more so for PC users, as Messages for Mac is capable of doing pretty much everything that Remote Messages can. Nevertheless, it is a quality tweak that definitely lives up to its price tag.

If you’re a Windows or Linux user, Remote Messages could be exactly what you’ve been searching for. As of its most recent release, the jailbreak tweak is fully optimized for iOS 7 and ARM64-iDevices, and as mentioned it can be downloaded in the Cydia Store for $3.99.
