Shelf Control: Disney's 'La Luna' iPad App Will Have You Feeling Over The Moon

January 6, 2014
For the first installment of Shelf Control this new year, we're going to take a look at one of AppAdvice's Top 10 Best Paid iPad Apps Of 2013, Disney's La Luna: The Story Project. Released in September 2013, La Luna: The Story Project is the official iPad companion app of "La Luna." "La Luna" is the Oscar-nominated Disney/Pixar computer-animated short film that played in front of the Oscar-winning Disney/Pixar computer-animated feature film "Brave" in 2012. Essentially, La Luna: The Story Project lets you watch the full, 7-minute theatrical release of "La Luna" right on your iPad and experience the short film in a couple of other ways: as an interactive video and as an interactive storybook. In both alternative formats, narration and read-along text are provided. The interactive video is notable in that it lets you and your little ones tap and swipe to trigger certain animations as the story unfolds. And the interactive storybook is remarkable primarily for its showcase of original artwork created by none other than the short's director, Enrico Casarosa. In all cases, you can be certain to encounter a wonderful tale centered on a young boy who learns about the significance of being one's own self in the unlikeliest of places: the moon (or in Italian, la luna.) In addition to the short film, the interactive video, and the interactive storybook, La Luna: The Story Project features a behind-the-scenes section. This section offers a peek into what went into the making of the short, including storyboards, turntables, sound design, visual design, and progression reel. La Luna: The Story Project is available in the App Store for iPad 2, third-generation iPad, fourth-generation iPad, iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad mini with Retina display. Just before the year that was ended, La Luna: The Story Project went free in celebration of its being hailed as one of the App Store's Best of 2013 in the Innovative Kids Apps category. But it's now back to its regular price of $1.99. At any rate, La Luna: The Story Project is a great app to have for watching (and re-watching) and reading (and re-reading) a great story for kids of all ages.
