Report: Samsung Is No Longer Working On Apple's 'A8' Processor
February 17, 2014
It looks like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) will be Apple’s sole manufacturer of the “A8” processor. Apple has dropped Samsung as a provider for the chip that will likely be found on 2014 iOS devices, according to TechNews Taiwan.
The report suggests Samsung was dropped because of low yields in its 20 nm manufacturing process for the A-series processor. Apple’s “A9” processor, likely to arrive on iOS devices in 2015, is still expected to be jointly produced by TSMC and Samsung.
In June 2013, The Wall Street Journal became the first publication to say that TSMC would be supplying Apple with the A8 chips for future iDevices. Three months later, Korean newspaper Hankyung noted that Samsung would be responsible for only 30 to 40 percent of the production of the upcoming A8 chip, while TSMC would handle the rest.
Two months ago, Digitimes reported that TSMC “should land 60-70%” of Apple’s A8 orders, with Samsung providing the rest.
The A8 processor should show up on the upcoming "iPhone 6," and next-generation iPad Air.
