The Big Samsung Galaxy S5 Reveal Is Coming Feb. 24
February 4, 2014
Samsung is likely to unveil the Galaxy S5 on Feb. 24. That is when the company is holding a special media event at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, Spain.
The press invitation to the event doesn’t actually say “Galaxy S5,” of course. But it does mention that this is an “Unpacked 5” event, and labeled as Samsung’s first major mobile announcement of 2014.
The Galaxy S4 was unveiled on March 13, 2013 at Samsung Mobile Unpacked in New York City. The smartphone launched in stores in late April 2013.
In January, SamMobile reported that Samsung's next handset would likely come in two versions: a metal-clad premium edition, and a cheaper plastic model. Earlier, Bloomberg reported Samsung plans to release the Galaxy S5 in April.
The arrival of its new flagship device couldn't come at a better time for Samsung. During the holiday quarter, the Korean-based company reported its slowest profit growth since 2011. The slowdown has been attributed to the late September arrival of new Apple iPhones, and currency moves of the Korean won. Profits are also being squeezed by less expensive handsets made by Lenovo Group Ltd. and Huawei Technologies Co.
