Highly Rated E-Reading App Marvin Gains New Star Rating System And More Features

March 9, 2014

Among the e-reading apps available on iOS (or on any platform for that matter), Marvin is easily one of the best, if not the best. It also happens to be one of the most frequently updated, with new features and enhancements. In fact, it has just received another significant update.

Most notably, the new update introduces a star rating system to Marvin, which is somewhat apt for a 5-star app. Essentially, this system lets you rate a book from the metadata editor.

In line with this, the update also adds six new smart collections to filter your library by star rating (unrated, 1 star, 2 stars, 3 stars, 4 stars, and 5 stars), which you can display by tapping the pencil icon in the organizer. It also adds support for bulk rating sets of books, showing the ratings in library list views, and importing and displaying ratings for books newly added using Calibre.

The new version of Marvin also includes the following new features and enhancements:

  • German and British English localizations.
  • You can delete bookmarks and highlights from the table-of-contents screen.
  • You can edit the note of a highlight from the table-of-contents screen.
  • Bookmarks can be annotated from the table-of-contents screen.
  • Long pressing a book in library list view opens the metadata editor.
  • [iPad] Send main book by email from home screen.
  • Long press a book in the home screen to delete, share, annotate and mark it as unopened.
  • Keywords in the library search bar (see blog.marvinapp.com for details).
  • Added the ability to attach a note to a book (long press home screen, menu in library).
  • Added Iowan font (requires iOS 7).
  • Streamlined installation (download size for new users is about 11 MB smaller).
  • [iPhone] Tweaked home screen animation when switching to secondary book panel.
  • Tapping the highlight/note menu button within an existing highlight brings up the editor rather than creating multiple highlights on top of each other.
  • Book description when sharing books by email (if available).
  • Updated calibre connector to support rating metadata syncing and bulk locking of books using the Marvin XD calibre plugin.
  • [iPad] Alpha picker is sticky.
  • In-book toolbar icons match text color.
  • Several UI improvements.

The new version of Marvin is available now in the App Store as a free update or as a new $2.99 download. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 6.0 or later.
