Square Prompts Customers To Upgrade To Its New, Thinner Card Reader For Free

March 30, 2014

Square is in the process of informing owners of its first-generation Square Reader that the new, thinner second-generation model should now be ordered as a free upgrade.

The news reached us from 9to5mac, which explained that customers are being prompted to order their free upgrade using the Square Web interface (pictured above).

Here, Square notes that beginning June 1, the older Reader will no longer be supported: the company is instead switching over to the smaller, thinner model created by the designer of Apple’s Lightning connector, and as such all customers are encouraged to switch over to the new product before June 1.

We explained back in December that key features of the new Square Reader include:

  • A custom magnetic readhead and spring. Thinner and more accurate than the alternatives, the readhead parses redundant data from credit cards to ensure successful swipes.
  • Custom electronics in a single chip. The reader is powered by the phone into which it is plugged, eliminating the need for a bulky battery and increasing life and reliability.
  • Improved communications protocols and a custom audio plug. The Square Reader is compatible with more devices than ever before.

The point-of-sale accessory can be used alongside the Square Register iOS app in order to allow users to receive card payments from customers. The company was co-founded in 2010 by Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, and as far as iOS-compatible mobile payments solutions go, it’s proven to be one of the most successful.

For more information on the switchover to Square’s new Reader, along with the option of upgrading to the new model free of charge, stop by the Square Web dashboard.
